My 19th month old loves “Dear Zoo” (see amazon link below), and has for a while. The graphics are very simple, and the story teaches lots of descriptive words. The flaps are easy and exciting for little hands. And there is lots of room to add your own imagination to each page.

He also loves a book we got from the library called “You Can’t go to School Naked” by Dianne Billstrom. A must for any toddler who doesn’t like to get dressed!

A favorite as a baby was “My Animals” by Xavier Deneux. It’s black and white with a hole on each page that peeks through to the next animal.

For toddlers who love repetitive text – Dear Zoo; Brown Bear Brown Bear; and Snail Where are You. Other great stories that my toddler loves: Otis; Knuffle Bunny; One Red Apple; What Makes a Rainbow; The Bear Snores On; and Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball. My 2 1/2 year old also loves singing now, so Puff the Magic Dragon which features the text of the song along with the CD is a favorite. He puts the CD into my laptop and sings along as he flips to the corresponding pages. He loves loves loves that book.

Mo Willems has such a great dry wit throughout the books like Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and others in the PIgeon series and kids relate to the attitudes and simplicity of the story. I just discovered the Piggie and Elephant ones that are by the same author such as I am invited to a Party, I will Surprise my Friend and Elephants Cannot Dance. My daughter loves to read them with us and certain words will prompt her to recite the story.

my daughter loves the book animal colors a rainbow of color from animals around the world by beth feilding. its a fun educational book. Each page has a different group of animals of a specific color. My daughter learns about colors and all these interesting animals that you wouldn’t see in most books for toddlers. You also learn interesting facts about each animal. The pictures of the animals are real pictures not drawings so my daughter gets to see what these animals really look like. I have to admit that I have learned a lot about animals as well from this book. Like did you know that a seahorse changes colors like chameleons, sims with its head, and males give birth to babies. why can’t we be seahorses!!

Well, besides ALL the Sandra Boynton books, which I LOVE to read to my 20 month old, we also like the “Big Picture Books” on Counting, Alphabet, Animals, etc. These big books are great for teaching since they’re so big and colorful. “Baby Animals” are also his favorite since he loves babies of all sorts. I also like the ‘Play and Sound’ and touch and feel books. Fun sounds and nice for little fingers to explore.
