I take my 2 year old daughter to a weekly ballet class as well as taking advantage of open play sessions at NY Kids Club and the indoor play space at Scandinavia House. On days where it is 30 degrees or more, we go for “jogs” around the block and in Madison Square Park.
Sleigh rides (aka Mommy pulls baby in a sled). Also, if it’s too cold to go out and we’ve been in all day, I allow a rare video to be watched. His current fav: You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, by the Wiggles. So we dance together. You can use up a lot of energy dancing! Same with The Sound of Music, I become Julie and “running across the mountaintops” or back and forth to demonstrate each “note”, is a LOT of energy! And he falls over giggling.
Stroller Strides is such a great way to workout and be with your baby at the same time! They have locations all over Westchester. It’s for babies 6 weeks and up. We do it at The Jefferson Valley Mall but they have it at the Westchester too. It’s a really good workout and fun!
I use a wii fit so my 2 year old will exercise with me. We also go for “walks” to get mail, do laundry, etc. Sometimes we build forts with couch pillows and try to burn some energy off that way too. Music and dancing are always a must when trapped indoors!
My favorite thing is let Olivia (18 months) walk herself to the NYSC (3 blocks away) and play ($5/hour) while I work out. She walks home and returns exhausted and ready for a long nap!
We signed our 2 year old son up for gym classes at JW Tumbles. It’s a workout for me too – running all over after him! They also have free “open gyms” during the week for members, so we can go on days he doesn’t have class too.
Gymnastics at The Littlle Gym – because it has real equipment, bars, beams etc, I want to play too so we both get a good workout. Plus playing chase makes her giggle, so we have fun running around. Anything active that you enjoy and they enjoy doesn’t feel like an effort.
There are ~10 of us that rotate houses for a playdate on Monday afternoons. It’s a great excuse to get out of the house on a cold day and socialize with your friends while your kids get to interact with new and exciting toys they don’t have at home. I also love Super Soccer Stars (we take at Kidville)–it’s 45 min. of running and more running that is sure to wear your toddler out for a good winter’s nap!
There is nothing like playing in the snow to tucker out my 2 year old who loves to kick it, dig it, roll in it, climb it, pull me in the sled, make snow angels, etc. He gets these adorable rosie cheeks and falls asleep much easier. On days we don’t do out, we run around chasing each other in the apartment, or take the cushions off the old couch so he can jump on them, and we do yoga (he has his own mat and will do a few poses, but he prefers crawling under my down dog, sliding down my bridge pose and climbing on top of me whenever possible, which gives me quite a workout and he has a blast. There’s no relaxation pose at the end however, so when the sitter is over, I try to do some yoga outside the home as well.
My daughter takes Ballet and my son takes Taekwondo. We also have a pretty spacious basement where they ride their bikes and scooters throughout the winter or we have races, do jumping jacks, sit-ups…anything to get some exercise during the cold winter months. Today we tried a roller skating rink in Long Island and had so much fun while getting exercise. In the Spring and Fall we go hiking, biking and/or take long walks.
My daughter takes ballet and swim lessons and we dance on our own all the time!
I take my son to Sokol New York for gym class each week. It is great excercise for him and tires me out too since I have to chase him around!
I use the wii. There are quite a few games that I can do while my son is either taking a nap. They also have games that you can play with your child. On a warm day I go walking.
I love taking my 14 month old daughter to Stroller Strides at The Westchester. It is a great workout for me and the fact that I can bring my daughter with me makes it even better.
My 2 1/2 year old is having fun with Soccer Stars. On the weekends, she loves to run around the Museum of Natural History – great space and sites for her!
We have dance parties! And we try to take lots of walks in the park with daddy and with other moms.
