We love Try & Buy Toy Store in Pleasantville (Westchester.) You can try out the toys before you buy, the staff is helpful and it isn’t all that much more expensive than chain toy stores.

I just recently discovered this store Scarsdale Child’s Play in Scarsdale and think it would be considered a mom and pop store…..not 100%. Very cute toys from around the world and free gift wrapping!

This isn’t a baby/kid store… but I love Gotham Coffe Shop on the UES. Its got great coffee, great pastries from bakeries around the city and friendly workers. My favorite is their Chai tea. YUM!

A Time for Children on Amsterdam (UWS) – they donate 100% of profits to Children’s Aid Society…have tons of unique clothes, toys and gifts. Also love West Side Kids (toy store) – they have just about something for every age group — great for last minute gifts!

Though it counts as a splurge to shop there, I love the quality of the well-made items at Bu and the Duck on the UES and in Tribeca. Planet Kids is great for basics when UESers don’t want to schlep to Buy Buy Baby or Babies R’ Us…

Moonsoup on 2nd Ave and E 55th Street has a great selection of toys. Not quite mom and pop, but most Hallmark stores have all of the toy essentials — Melissa & Doug, Legos, KNEX, etc.

Cherry’s (children’s) Pharmacy on E 66th bw 2nd & 3rd. Not only is the staff friendly and delivery convenient but it’s the only place I could find the nosefrida nasal aspirator.

I like Real Birth on 9th Avenue and 48th Street. The sell the basics strollers, slings, clothing, highchairs, feeding utensils, toys, etc… but they often have more unique brands and gifts that you don’t always find in the chain stores. They also have childbirth preperation classes, moms support groups, baby/toddler classes etc.. They also offer great customer service and support and are welcoming if you just need a place to change your baby while on the go.
