Whitepost Farms on LI was a huge hit, as was Muskoot Farms in Katonah.

Last year around this time we spent a nice, long day on Long Island. We went to Stakey’s Pumpkin Farm http://www.stakeyspumpkinfarm.com where they have all sorts of things for the kids: hay rides, mazes, crafts, face painting, bounce house, etc. Then we went to the Oyster Festival in Oyster Bay (this year it was held on Oct 17-18). Being new to NYC that was my first time on Long Island and I really enjoyed it.

I love taking my son here:

There are so many great activities for kids – especially in the fall when they have their annual fall harvest celebration with pumpkins, hayrides, you name it!

A great trip to the Bronx Zoo. A bunch of us took the express bus. It took about a half hour to get out there. Very easy and very quick.

Van Saun Park in Bergen County, NJ. They have a large playground, picnic areas, a carousel, a fabulous zoo and antique train ride. My kids had a blast.

Van Saun Park Zoo in Paramus is a wonderful little animal sanctuary where kids can get up close to animals, ride on a train, have a picnic, and go on the playground!

We like the Bronx Zoo very much. Easy to get to, easy parking etc. we have a membership which easily pays for itself in 3 trips or so (including central park zoo).

I agree with the above posters who recommend Van Saun Park – easy to get to and so much to do! And just this morning I was looking at the website for Muscoot Farm and thinking about planning a trip there.

We love to take a yearly trip to New Paltz and visit Apple Hill farms. They have fire engine rides, apple picking, hayrides, pumpkin picking, and the best apple donuts and cider to be found! The town of New Paltz is adorable, and there’s a lot of food and shopping options. Plus, the views of the Catskills are just stunning!

Silverman’s Farm in Easton, Ct : http://www.silvermansfarm.com. Hay rides, music, apple picking, petting zoo- great for this time of year. And when it gets cold try Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk CT

Turtle Back Zoo in NJ. From some points in the city, it would be 1 1/4 hours…but so worth it!

I recommend the Norwalk Aquarium or Stepping Stones Children’s Museum in Norwalk, CT. Both are terrific spots for little ones and are easy trips out of the city by car or train.

stepping stones children’s museum in Norwalk is great – and easy to get to. They also have a children’s aquarium about 5 minutes away and Silverman’s Farm is close to it all

One of our favorite places is Teatown in Ossining. My children (5 and 4) and I love participating in outdoorsy/nature type of activities and Teatown has beautiful, scenic trails, great places to picnic and a nature center. We just went on a Fall hike yesterday and our pictures are amazing — alive with the vibrant colors of Fall! We even picked up some fallen leaves and classified the type of tree it came from with the signs on the trails. Lots of good fun at Teatown (www.teatown.org).

I think the best children’s day trip is one to the Bronx Zoo. It has both indoor and outdoor ganimal pavillions to visit as well as rides for the children. Imagine riding a camel in NYC or going on a carousel made of animals in NYC or riding the monorail to see wild animals within the confine of your seat. There is always Wednesdats with free admissions and Tuesdays with special attractions for Toddlers. It is exciting, appealing and within an hour of the city.
